Conversion factors used

Value → Square meters → Target unit
1 acre= 4,046.8564 m² = 100 cents
1 hectare= 10,000 m² ≈ 2.471 acres
1 cent= 40.4686 m² (1⁄100 acre, South India)
1 guntha≈ 101.17 m² (1⁄40 acre, Maharashtra/Karnataka)
1 bigha≈ 2,529.3 m² (North Indian pucca convention — varies by state)
Worked example

A 50-cent plot in acres and square feet

Since 1 cent equals exactly 1⁄100 of an acre, 50 cents converts directly to 0.5 acres. Converting through square meters (50 × 40.4686 ≈ 2,023.4 m²) and then to square feet (2,023.4 ÷ 0.0929) gives approximately 21,780 sq ft — the standard "half acre" figure many South Indian property listings use interchangeably with "50 cents."

FAQ

Common questions

Acres and hectares are internationally standardized, but many regions historically measured land in locally defined units tied to traditional surveying practices. Cents (South India), guntha (Maharashtra/Karnataka), and bigha (North India) are still how land is bought, sold, and listed in property records in those regions, so converting to and from them is often necessary even though they are not part of the metric or imperial systems.
